The design of a website is such a subjective presentation. What appeals to one may not appeal to another. One of the primary keys to website design is to listen.
Listen to your customers when they describe what they want the site to look like. Listen to website users when they comment on what works and what does not. Interestingly though, website users are not the ones who will make the decision of whether your design is worth paying for. The website client will make that decision. So. .. . listening to your client is critical.
With this site, I am the client and I am the developer. I was really looking for a design that appealled to me. If others find it appealing then they will visit. If they don't then they won't visit. Although, people will visit an unappealing website if the content is something they can not live without. Myspace is a classic example. Some of the user pages I have seen are very unappealing, yet people from all over the world have myspace pages. Go figure.
The eternal struggle. Put something on the web that millions of people can not live without and make it look good!
I don't know if I have achieved either of these, but it is a start. I have this site primarily to provide a place for me to enter time spent on projects into a SQL database so that my accounting people have that information in a timely manner to produce invoices to customers in a timely manner. For that, this site has merit. For others, that is yet to be seen.
Anyway, just running off at the mouth (or the fingers). Happy Holidays!
